Summary

I recently made a Swappable hot end on which this laser engraver can be placed. I intentionally placed the female version of the d sub connector at the tool side because the mixed male version fits a regular female one and not vice versa.

A major advantage I have encountered is that you don’t have to connect the laser directly to the control board, or worse, with a switch. You can just use the schematics as shown in the swappable hot end and connect the laser to the part fan and the fan of the laser to the hot end fan. In this way the fan is constantly spinning which keeps the engraver colder.

I have made a video about this upgrade and it shows how I managed to laser engrave a 3D printed part. I have added the cross to the files which I have used in the video to determine the tool center point of the engraver relative to the 3D printer nozzle.

Print Settings

Printer: Creality CR-10
Rafts: No
Supports: Doesn’t matter
Resolution: 0.2
Infill: 20%
Filament: Nylon CF

Mounting instructions

To prevent the printer going into error state you can connect a 100k resistor at the thermistor connections. The printer will measure 25°C.

If you want to add this to your printer you need the Quick tool change which I have designed at the start of this year.
