In my attempt of making a food printer I decided to drive it with a flexible shaft. I still want the printer to be able to switch between tools so I made a detachable head which enables the shaft to be easily connected and disconnected. The connector has used some design elements of the custom connector I’ve made earlier.

It must be said that due to my failure of the stepper motor I wasn’t able to test this but the first signs were very positive! So keep in mind that things might change and if you run into any issues don’t hesitate to contact me.

This print is tricky, yet doable. It’s always possible to buy the complete G5 Flex set at the website of Flex3Drive.

Mounting instructions

You can find a pdf in the download which shows the dimensions of the screw modification and the arrangement of parts. For the rest you need:

  • The Flex3Drive G5 HW kit or G5 Flex Extruder and I selected a shaft length of 650mm. I don’t share the printable parts of this kit, even if it’s open source. Please contact them for the printable parts.
  • One of all printable parts in the download.
  • 1× M5×40 socket head screw with a collar like this one. Cut this to a length of 16mm so only the collar without the thread is left and make a flat side to it like is shown in the pdf in the download.
  • Standard 4mm hexagon bit.
  • 2× Screw lock RS nr.: 680-8945.
  • 6× M3 threaded insert (included in the kit in my case) otherwise I use the 137104 by Onkenhout.
  • 1× D-sub connector back shell RS nr.: 484-694.
  • 2× M3 washer to place into the connector which holds the locker
  • 2× M3×10 hexagon screw for locking the shaft
  • 2× M3 nut
  • The Quick tool change system
