Google Pixel 9 camera phone case

Note that this design is only for the Google Pixel 9 and not the 9 pro. It will fit the 9 pro, but because the 9 pro has 3 cameras, one camera will be behind the edge of the filter. This could potentially be solved by modifying the design to fit a bigger filter. Maybe, if there is enough interest I will modify the design to make it also fit for the 9 pro and potentially other phones as well.

The idea for this case started when I needed an ND filter. The phone, like practically any phone, has a fixed aperture. So, if there is a lot of light, the first thing the camera does is lower its ISO which leads to less noise and is a good thing. However, this goes only as low, so to prevent the camera from clipping it will decrease its shutter speed and this is where the problem starts. Most people won’t notice, but this removes motion blur and makes the footage look cheap and shot on a phone. The only thing we can do in this situation is reduce the amount of light entering the lens, hence the ND filter.

This led to going down the rabbit hole of lens filters and trying several other filters like color, star and anamorphic. These are a lot of fun to play with and with some interesting results! If you’re wondering why I chose 49mm, this is because this is the same filter size as my Fujifilm X100VI for which I already bought some filters. Also, it just happens to fit really well with the package.

This phone case also features an Arca Swiss mount which is a very common tripod mounting system together with the option to place 4 ¼” inserts1 which is the regular camera thread. This can be used to mount other plates, or mount the phone to a camera arm for instance.

1. Leave the support structure on there first, this makes melting in the inserts easier.
   2. Before going through the effort of melting in the inserts and pressing in the phone I suggest you try to fit a filter first. This is a very fine pitched thread and although mine always fits perfectly, this is rather critical. Don’t force it and risk cross threading, you should be able to feel it threading while the filter stays parallel to the back of the phone case.
   3. Melt in the inserts. The inserter tool is a bit longer than the short version of the inserts. This will melt a hole through the back. This can be prevented by using a washer, or filing the brass tip shorter. The latter will give the best results. If you do puncture a hole, you can close it by adding a piece of electrical tape on the inside of the case. You won’t see this anyway.
   4. Remove the support structure using a spatula that fits in the opening where the phone’s buttons go. The standard spatulas you get with printers, usually fit.
   5. Press in the phone. The easiest way to do this is by pressing in the bottom of the phone first. Do this with caution, don’t press on the screen and please don’t force it. If you don’t trust it, don’t continue!
